Particularly controversial is his 2014 American Sniper, a devastating and personal picture of the horrors of war. Many of the chapters in this collection of critical essays on Eastwood discuss American Sniper. The others address films that deserve more attention than they have received to date. The chapters vary by topic, identifying themes ranging from aging, race, and gender to uses of western conventions and myth and the subtleties of quieter moments in Eastwood's work. As a collection, these essays show that no single theme accounts for Eastwood's entire vision, which is multifaceted and often contradictory, dramatizing complex issues in powerful, character-driven narratives. An afterword by Drucilla Cornell offers insights into the complicated and often surprising implications of Eastwood's gender politics. An interview with longtime Eastwood editor Joel Cox, conducted and written by Paul Seydor, probes the details of Eastwood and Cox's collaborative filmmaking processes and pays tribute to the underrated art of film editing.
