Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, drawing on archival materials, provides a comprehensive account of the administration of the papal bureaucracy from the Great Schism until the Reformation, tracking institutional and personal developments within a specific office. It shows how, during a period of significant institutional change, the papal bureaucracy coped with the challenges of war, plague, economic turmoil, and the devastating schism within the Church. Highlighting the role of individuals and factions within the bureaucracy, the author sheds new light on the internal workings of the papal court and the effectiveness of the administration in a turbulent era of history. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. In the period from the Schism (1378 -1417) to the beginning of the Renaissance, the papal administration reached its lowest point. Many abuses crept in, administrative malpractices became rampant, and the entire structure of the papal offices was thrown into disarray. This book looks at the impact of the Schism on the papal chancery and administration. Using a variety of sources, most notably the agendas and reports of the Council of Constance (1414-18) and the reform legislation of Martin V, Eugenius IV, and Nicholas V, the book examines the complex ecclesiastical politics of the time, the attempts to restore order to the administration, and the problems faced by the Church as it attempted to grapple with endemic corruption following a period of deep crisis.
