Alla ricerca di una risposta, gli autori di questo libro propongono il racconto di otto esemplari storie d'amore, che sono al tempo stesso un viaggio avvincente nella pittura e nella poesia italiane dei secoli XV e XVI. Il punto di partenza di questo itinerario è il modello ideale di amore fissato da Petrarca nel Canzoniere: la scoperta di una passione amorosa, libera dai vincoli coniugali, ma anche da quelli della sessualità e del corpo. Nei secoli successivi da questo canone nasce rituale amoroso che prescrive la celebrazione dell'amore ideale per una donna tanto bella quanto inaccessibile, alla quale si dedica un ritratto accompagnato da un commento poetico. La pratica di questo rituale diventa un raffinato gioco di società promosso dall'élite intellettuale italiana. Gli attori del gioco sono coppie celebri: da Lorenzo de' Medici e Lucrezia Donati ad Alessandro Farnese e Livia Colonna, e gli artisti coinvolti si chiamano Giovanni Bellini, Leonardo, Tiziano. Fatalmente l'amore ideale si trasforma in una concreta passione, a cui il rituale petrarchesco fa da galante copertura. Così, prima che la repressione dei costumi imposta dalla Controriforma ponga fine al sofisticato gioco, l'amore rinascimentale sembra anticipare di oltre due secoli quello romantico.
