Pietsch untersucht dieses Sp…annungsverhältnis im europäischen Kontext. - Das ungarische Judentum bildete im 19. Jahrhundert die größte deutschsprechende jüdische Gemeinschaft außerhalb Deutschlands. Darüber hinaus bestanden enge Wechselbeziehungen zwischen ungarischen und westeuropäischen Juden. Aus dem ungarischen Judentum, das integraler Bestandteil der k.u.k. Monarchie war, gingen maßgebliche Anstöße für Ultra-Orthodoxie und Zionismus hervor, die bis heute Kernelemente der Auseinandersetzung über Reform und Tradition sind. Im Königreich Ungarn war im 19. Jahrhundert das Emanzipations- und Integrationsangebot für die Juden zwar sehr viel umfassender als in den Nachbarländern. Hier prallten aber auch die Gegensätze zwischen assimilationsbereiten Reformjuden und an der Tradition festhaltenden osteuropäischen Juden viel schärfer und radikaler aufeinander als in irgendeinem anderen osteuropäischen Land. Der Band enthält acht Einzelstudien, die dieses einzigartige Spannungsverhältnis im europäischen Kontext untersuchen und deutlich machen, welche wichtigen Anstöße für die tragische Spaltung im ungarischen Judentum von Deutschland ausgingen: Hier ist beispielhaft die von Samson Raphael Hirsch in Frankfurt begonnene Neo-Orthodoxie und Austrittsbewegung zu nennen. Zugleich werden die Auswirkungen des Spannungsverhältnisses von Reform und Orthodoxie auf den Modernisierungs- und Integrationsprozeß des ungarischen Judentums dargestellt.
