Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Later Edition. With sixty-four steel engravings. Nine volumes in publisher's black cloth, gilt decoration front boards of the Walpole crest, with motto "Fai Quae Sentiat", top edges gilt. Near Fine, the usual slight toning at end papers, a few corners mildly bumped, period small bookseller's label rear past downs. A quite handsome set. Spines have raised bands, elaborate gilt decoration and two labels, one red and one black. The endpapers and paper edges are marbled. Engraved plates. 1" split at top back hinge of Vol. 1. Joints - very good condition - gently rubbed. Corners - very good condition - gently bumped and worn. Boards - very good condition - coarse grained morocco and cloth covered boards, minor marks and wear. Page edges - good condition - top edge darkened gilt, others tanned, ding to the top edge of Vol II. Binding - good condition. See above and photos. Internally Hinges - good condition - sound, some straining to the gutter of Vol I at the title. Paste downs - good condition - marbled with bookplate. End papers - good condition - marbled, subsequently tanned and foxed. Title - good condition - tanned with foxing from the portraits. Pages - good condition - tanned with some foxing and offsetting from the portraits, minor marks, minor creasing to the top of pages 195 to 258. See photos.
