Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. An association copy, signed on the half-title page by Eiseley and with the ownership signature of sculptor Walker Hancock on the front free endpaper. Hancock was a celebrated monument artist who was awarded both the National Medal of Arts by Congress and the Medal of Freedom by George Bush; his sculptures are found across the nation and especially in Washington, DC. Walker and Eiseley overlapped in Philadelphia where Eiseley taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Walker chaired the sculpture department at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where Eiseley's wife Mabel was the assistant director. However, this book turned up in Gloucester, MA, where Hancock kept a home and studio on a property with an old quarry. This is Eiseley's sixth book, an examination of the age of space exploration, which "constitutes a public sacrifice equivalent to the building of the Great Pyramid at Giza." With woodcuts by Walter Ferro. A very good book in lavender and mustard cloth with a wrinkle on the front pastedown--seemingly a binder's error--and light sunning/soiling to board edges. Also faint dust-soiling to the top face of the text block and faint foxing to the outer text block face (that Gloucester air). The jacket is very good with a little edge wear and several short tears to the top edge, several of them tape mended. A nice association. Illus. By Walter Ferro (illustrator). Signed.…
