Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Reprint, Bodley Head 1942. Thick Royal 8vo. 852pp. Internally very good clean tight sound square, no bookplate, inscriptions or ownership marks of any kind. Bound in green lettered and illustrated beige wide weave linen cloth, gently bumped to lower corner, housed and protected in original green dustwrapper chipped to edges and with short tear to lower corner. Translated as The Golden Lotus, this is a Chinese novel of manners from the Ming Dynasty in the 16th century, and 100 chapters long. 'The explicit depiction of sexuality garnered the novel a notoriety akin to Lady Chatterley's Lover and Lolita in the West, but critics such as the translator David Tod Roy see a firm moral structure which exacts retribution for the sexual libertinism of the central characters.' Authorship is unknown, but British orientalist Arthur Waley, who wrote the Introduction here, suggested that the strongest candidate as author was Xu Wei, a renowned painter and member of the "realistic" Gong'an school of letters. This Edition, with Chinese characters in green to upper, is increasingly uncommon.

Small mark to bottom edge. Paper punch hole to top edge of front cover. Browning to spine of cloth. Beige cloth with green lettering. No date. With an Introduction by Arthur Waley. This English translation by Bernard Miall from the abridged version by Franz Kuhn (Insel-Verlag, Leipzig) first published in 1939. The following, pieced together from various sources, is the legend of how the Chin P'ing Mei came to be written: In the middle of the sixteenth century A.D. a humble official named Wang Yu happened to be the owner of a very important picture, the Going Up River by Chang Tse-tuan of the Sung dynasty. it was important not only as a work of art but also as a historical document, for it portrayed the splenours of K' aifent Fu, the Northern Sung capital, previous to its destruction in A.D. 1127 by the Kin Tartars. The picture was voered by a wicked and tyrannical offical named Yen Sung, who made every effort to secure it. For a long time Wang Yu held out; but the wicked Yen Sung having finally become all-powerful in the Government was able to threaten Wang with the complete ruin of himself and his family, and at last Wang saw no alternative but to consent. 852 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
