Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book details a crucial investigation that established a gold-standard scale for measuring temperature which is still referenced today. The measurement scale defined by a perfect gas thermometer was already known to be superior to all others. But because gas thermometers were impractical for everyday use, the task was to determine how closely readings from mercury-in-glass thermometers could match those from gas thermometers. Over a series of experiments, the author thoroughly tested several primary standard mercury-in-glass thermometers, determining how closely their scales reproduced the gas scale. The author's highly precise work helped establish the International Hydrogen Scale of Temperature, which became the standard for temperature measurement for decades and laid the groundwork for even more accurate methods.
