Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Edward Wadsworth (illustrator). First edition. A first edition of this collection of twenty prints of the Black Country from English artist Edward Wadsworth. First edition. Illustrated with twenty monochrome plates. Collated complete. A collection of pen and ink drawings of industrial landscapes that were later developed by Wadsworth into a one-man show with the title The Black Country. Illustrated by Edward Alexander Wadsworth, an English artist initially associated with the Vorticism movement. Best known after the First World War for his maritime landscapes and still-life compositions using tempera were infused with a surrealistic mood, though he never exhibited with the British surrealists. With an introduction from Enoch Arnold Bennett, an English author, best known as a prolific novelist. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the cloth with light loss of the cloth to the board tips. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers. Very Good. book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Edward Wadsworth (illustrator). 1st Edition. Uninscribed. In the original black cloth with gilt lettering panel. One corner of the cloth has a dull surface, perhaps due to water damage, but it is barely noticeable and has not affected the paper. There is some staining to the tissue guards.

With an introduction by Arnold Bennett. 20 plates being collotyped drawings by Edward Wadsworth, with woodcut and woodcut initial and press device also by the artist. One of 450 (500) copies printed in Caslon on wove paper. Folio, original quarter natural linen with green linen sides, green lettering on spine, slightly rubbed at head and tale of spine and with bumping to corners, endpapers very mildly darkened but generally a good, clean copy. The introduction by Arnold Bennett is reprinted from the Leicester Galleries catalogue which was printed for the January 1920 exhibition of this work. At the end are 3 pages of reproductions of press notices for the exhibition. Wadsworth had become part of the Vorticist group before World War One and this group of drawings which are a graphic presentation of industrialism pursue the group's aim reflect the mechanical and technological changes which affected twentieth century society.
