Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Evanston, IL: Clark Publishing Company, 1953. The December, 1953 issue of Fate Magazine (issue no.45) in Raymond A. Palmer's now-legendary paranormal-reporting non-fiction enterprise, which began with, in its first issue, Kenneth Arnold's cover account of flying crescents which "skipped like saucers across a pond", an event which, for whatever reason, kicked off the modern era of UFO events. After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. 12mo, illustrated perfect-bound wraps, 130 pp. A Near Fine copy - very near fine - with almost nothing to point to; micro-touching at spine and a touch of fade at left side of front cover (scan). As always in 50s pulps, some modest age-toning to the newsprint paper pages, which remain fully supple. See scans. Very high grade condition for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. See scans. See the scanned image of the contents page for the articles herein, which cover such topics as Divination (Comstock Lode), Ghosts, Schumann's Lost Concerto, Spirit Authors, The Fair Goddess Sarasvati, Great Lakes Anchor Mystery, ESP, Pre-Fortean, Chimera Blood, Math Prodigy, Through the Barrier, and of course much, much else, including the standard Departments, always engrossing in themselves, all on various other paranormal or inexplicable phenomena. Interior art and photography is largely uncredited. A piece of paranormal history, and an example of a unique branch of Americana, in very highly collectible condition. Please see scans. l52n.…

12mo, illustrated perfect-bound wraps, 98 pp. A much better than Very Good example, approaching Near Fine copy but for an small-scale top edge and a lightly touched lower right corner (see scans). An interesting letter casting light on the Victorian provincial press. Scott's entry in the Oxford DNB states that, while he was living in Birmingham, 'H. J. Palmer offered him a staff appointment on the Birmingham Gazette; but he had to leave when he stipulated that, as a Liberal, he should write nothing in support of the Conservative cause. He was working again as a freelance when, in 1887, he was invited by W. T. Stead to join him on the Pall Mall Gazette. He worked for six years on that paper under Stead and then Edward T. Cook.' 4pp, 12mo. On bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. The final page is smudged, including the signature, which clearly reads 'J. W. Robertson-Scott', with a hyphen. Begins: 'My dear Walters. / I heard a few days ago in a prominent B'ham politician's family that the Gazette was going into Radical hands! - of course the Rad. Unions was [mentioned?]. Are you able to put two and one together yet, to the manufacturing of an aquaferous (this word is original & patented) theory as to B[irmingha]. D[aily]. G[azette]. future? If you haven't, I have but a poor opinion of you.' He continues with reference to 'H. J. P.', i.e. H. J. Palmer (see above), The Times, plagiarism, Macaulay, Charles Blount, Milton's Areopagitica and the Biographia Britannica'. Postscript begins: 'The whole matter is pretty well settled if one knew whether H. J. P. was sacked or not.'.…
