During those four years, he was a prisoner of the Soviet Union, sentenced to a term of 25 years in a Corrective Labour Camp up in the Arctic Circle. His crim~illegal entry into the Russian Zone of Germany. He now gives for the first time the full account of his incredible experiences. Beginning with his first brush with the Russians on the east bank of the Elbe, he goes on to describe his successful trek to East Berlin across Soviet~held territory undertaken to meet his German girlfriend; his second and disastrous attempt to reach the old German capital; his brutal treatment in the 'Screaming Prison' of Lichtenburg; his nightmare journey into the twilight world of Siberia; his unceasing sabotage activities in the mining camp at Vorkuta; and shortly after the death of Stalin, his unaccountable transfer to Moscow and his subsequent return to this country. As the narrative unfolds, the reader is compelled to share Mr. Piddington's unequivocal attitude towards a regime in which millions of innocent citizens are condemned by their inhuman rulers to perpetual slavery. His verbatim reports of lunatic interrogations, the mockery of his own trial, the unholy travesty of justice generally~all the evidence, corroborated throughout by the harrowing testimony of his fellow~prisoners of all nationalities leads him to the inevitable conclusion that the house that Stalin built is a madhouse where maniacs rule. The impact of Piddington's story as told in RUSSIAN FRENZY, with one man pitting his strength, his cunning and his courage against the whole fearful apparatus of oppression, intimidation and torture, is truly devastating. The occasional pathetic interludes of friendship with a few courageous but hysterical men and women tend only to heighten the dramatic obsessions of his lonely fight. The book is beautifully written with a sensitivity and passionate sincerity which lifts it to the level of an outstandingly great book.…
