Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Lacking. First Edition, First Printing. ix, 321 pages (chiefly illustrations (some color)) 34 cm. Tall folio. Hardcover. Publisher's original cloth in Asian pattern over boards, gilt lettering to spine, illustrated end papers. Book Condition: About Fine with no discernable wear.… The interior is pristine. Lacking the dust jacket and the slipcase. The book itself is in fantastic, fine condition. In English; (first issued in German, as v. 2 of the author's "Kunst ferner Länder"). Easily one of the most beautiful art books we've ever had the pleasure of handling. Right up there with Elisofon's "Sculpture of Africa" and the like, but surpassing them in that the design of the book itself, the materials used, the objects pictured, the photography - are all at the highest level. The contents are divided into 10 chapters, each chapter deals with a different cultural/artistic sub-group of those that make up the continent of Asia. Each chapter begins with a short essay followed by a series of gloriously reproduced photogravures of some of the most compelling objet d'art ever assembled in one book. The majority of the plates are duotones but there are some color, there are also a large number of foldouts, either single or double. The overall effect is one of extraordinary artistry, scholarly knowledge, and pure magical art asserting itself across great distance and eons of time. It's a fantastic book, not scarce today, but destined to become so one day, and definitely never ever to be reprinted at this superlative quality.
