First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Lois L.L. De Vries (illustrator). 1st Edition. The Little Square People by Lois L.L. De Vries was published by Literary Commodities, New York, in 1925. Not an ex-library copy, this 6 3/4" X 9", 47-page, 89-year-old, believed-to-be First Edition offering is in G condition. There is modest yellowing of end papers front and back as well as text's pages, and spotty, light foxing is seen on a number of pages. The length of the spine, and the bottom edges of front and back cover boards are clear taped, albeit neatly. Shelf wear is observed at the top and bottom of volume's spine as well as at the four outer tips. Some random, light pencil markings are seen on the front paste down and loose end pages. Still, at age 89, this offering is a, no doubt, many-times-read survivor. The story line of this not exactly eccentric, but certainly somewhat odd/quirky literary effort, seems almost purposely simple and unremarkable, if only to lure young readers' attention to the most unusual black and white Illustrations, done by the author, throughout the book. They are all executed using variously sized squares, with arrows strategically thrown in for good measure. See for yourself, Reader, if you are not already familiar with De Vries' unusual artistic approach, as you follow the "adventures" of the handsome young man, the lovely maiden, their little girl, their dog(Big Jack), and their cat(Pussy-willow). Thank you!!
