Good copy l In the Netherlands synagogues can be found in something like one hundred towns and villages. Some are grand old buildings, land-marks in the townscape; others don't stand out and can be detected only through their Star of David or Hebrew lettering on the outside. Most of them, sadly, no longer serve their original purpose. The reason for this is that during World War II more than 100,000 Dutch Jews were killed. During the war some synagogues were destroyed. Those buildings that remain are interesting as part of their architectural setting in village or town; they bear witness to a once flourishing Jewish life. And despite the Shoa (Holocaust), Jewish life continues. In some places old buildings have been restored and sometimes even serve once more their original function as synagogue, while in other places new buildings have arisen since 1945.
