Pour que la rencontre se fasse, il fallait que le philosophe (lui) rompe avec l'idée qu'il existe des catégories abstraites : l'espace, le temps, il fallait q…ue l'historien (moi) recherche les chemins d'une autonomie de l'histoire intellectuelle. Où se situait le terrain de la rencontre ? Très précisément, je crois, au niveau du politique. Il s'agissait pour lui de montrer que la science grecque (l'astronomie par exemple) était, comme la raison grecque dans son ensemble, "fille de la cité". Il s'agissait pour moi de prouver que la Grèce n'avait pas été enfermée, comme les sociétés dites primitives décrites par Mircea Éliade, dans l'éternel retour d'un cycle. Un temps linéaire avait existé, au ve siècle singulièrement. Il exprimait l'affranchissement de la cité par rapport à la nature, aux dieux et aux rois de l'Orient.
