Front shows portrait of John Hay (signed and dated by Brenner at left of portrait), text reads "John Hay / The Rowfant Club Cleveland Ohio." Verso shows image of classic female figure seated with globe, contemplating a map of the China coastline, text reads "Open Door in the Far East." Number 6 of only 170 medals struck at the U.S. Mint for Ambrose Swasey of the Rowfant Club (number "6" struck on side of medal, housed in ORIGINAL BOX also with "6" on top and side of the cardboard box). The Hay medal designed and excuted by Victor David Brenner, best known as the designer of the Lincoln penny, is a scarce item of Rowfantia. Medal is clean with a strong patina.
