El triclosán, un antibacteriano recubierto de poliglactina 910(vicryl plus) y la cl…orohexidina ,un antibacteriano recubierto de poliglactina 910(3-0) (PECTRYL CS, sutura Dolphin) que sustituyen al método convencional de administración de antibióticos en las cirugías rutinarias de terceros molares y ayudan a maximizar los beneficios antimicrobianos a nivel local y a reducir la carga de antibióticos de forma sistemática y las complicaciones que se derivan. Aparte de los prometedores resultados de los estudios sobre suturas recubiertas de triclosán, el triclosán también presenta inconvenientes, como la formación de productos secundarios tóxicos (por ejemplo, fenoles clorados, metil triclosán) y resistencias a los antibióticos, probablemente debido a su prevalencia en cosméticos y jabones. Además, el triclosán favorece la unión mediada por proteínas de los estafilococos a las células del huésped, con la consecuencia de un mayor número de infecciones nasales causadas por la colonización de S. aureus en presencia de triclosán. Debido a estas restricciones en el uso del triclosán, se necesitan urgentemente alternativas. La clorohexidina es una alternativa muy eficaz, que inhibe patógenos relevantes de las infecciones de heridas.
