Contact seller3-star sellerLarge Oblong Quarto. A beautifully bound copy with 54 rich hand-colored lithographs enhanced with gum Arabic. Possibly, an early publisher's issue since title page is a pastedown. Presumably, the first published edition has 66 color plates; however, the beautiful plates were numbered and re-numbered so determining exactly which…ones were the earliest is not possible with the present information on OCLC. Bibliothek Nacional lists the numbered plates which they have cataloged separately (showing all but 5,6,17, 26, 32, 33, 56-66). The problem is further complicated by those who report having copies in OCLC with only limited plates [Brown University 19] {Boston University 26], Kunstbiblio Staatliche Musee zu Berlin, 60. Further examination suggests some plates re-numbered. Most copies report: titlepage wanting. Every plate contains five or six figures in uniforms from every Branch of the French military service from 1680 to 1850. UCLA reports having 65 leaves of plates. Since their plate 65 has an 1849 date, they presume this is the date of their copy, though it also lacks plate 66. Bound in a 20th century 1/4 green leather over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands gilt, compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, corners are vellum decorated in gilt, endpapers renewed, title page mounted, some of the paper is brown, others white, closed tear to plate #27 to outer margin not touching plate. A very good copy housed within a cloth covered slipcase.
