Met dit voornemen werd in februari 1847 in Den Haag het Schilderkundig Genootschap Pulchri Studio opgericht, wat uit ijver voor het schone betekent. Het eer…ste reglement werd ondertekend door 57 kunstenaars. Al vroeg was Pulchri een eerbiedwaardig instituut in de Hofstad, niet in het minst door de ruimhartige koninklijke belangstelling. Sinds 1898 huist Pulchri aan het Lange Voorhout voor haar kunstbeschouwingen, tentoonstellingen, luisterrijke sociëteitsfeesten met hun tableaux vivants en haar avonden waar getekend werd naar gekleed en ongekleed model. In deze bundel kijken leden van Pulchri Studio terug op hun geschiedenis. Met verhalen over oorsprong en groei, over tijdsbeelden met Haagse School en naoorlogse moderne kunst, over de omstreden veiling waarmee een dreigend bankroet werd afgewend. Met persoonlijke herinneringen aan hilarische en vertederende momenten. Met een kennismaking met mecenassen. Met liederen die gezongen werden en natuurlijk ook de neut die altijd neuden werd. Bijeengeschreven door en voor leden, maar ook voor geïnteresseerde niet-leden bevat deze uitgave interessante inkijkjes. De redactie was in handen van Kitty Bos, Wim van Cleef, Margreet Hofland en Michael Toorop, daarbij ondersteund door archiefonderzoek van Marti van Spronsen.
