[Vol I & II]. Westminster: Archibald Constable And Company 1897. 1st Edition. Two Volumes 4to (246x163m), xiii, [2], 510pp, [2 fold out maps], xiii, [2], 671pp, [2 fold out maps]. Good. Original green cloth binding with gold gilt lettering and decoration on the boards and spine, including an illustration of the ship "The Fram" on Volume I and a man walking through the snow with dogs and a sleigh on Volume II. Extensive illustrations and photographs throughout both volumes. Marks and stains on the front boards of both volumes, knocks and bumps to the corners of the boards and to the head and base of the spine. Internally, the books are in excellent condition with very little sign of foxing in either copy. The large fold out map in Vol I has a small tear but still folds out completely and is clean. Vol II internally is completely clean and in remarkable condition. The edges to some of the pages are uncut. The textbook is tight and square with Vol II having a small amount of lateral movement likely due to the size of the textblock. EX-LIBRIS Hugh Veitch Haig (1845-1902) with a dedication "To H. V. Haig from his affectionate G. M. H. February 1897" written in black ink on the front free endpage and is signed by Hugh on the following page. Hugh Veitch Haig was the brother of Field Marshall Douglas Haig, the decorated military commander famous for his exploits during the First World War. Their father, John Richard Haig was head and founder of the famous Haig whiskey distillery, also known as the Cameronbridge distillery which was founded in 1824. The Haig family have been distilling in Scotland for generations, with records as far back as 1600 mentioning a "John Haig" being involved in the trade. There is little documented about the life of Hugh Veitch Haig - aside from his marriage and 4 children - but his position in a prominent Scottish family means there is a portraits of him which were painted by John Henry Lorimer (1856-1936) from 1884 which was sold at auction to a private bidder in 2022. In two volumes, these are Nansen's recollections of the 1893 "Fram Expedition" to attempt to reach the North Pole. After 18 months of very slow progress, this plan was abandoned and Nansen took to this ice with dogs and sledges to attempt to reach the pole. While they were unsuccessful they did record the furthest expedition north at this point, recording a latitude of 86°13.6′N. This is a first edition copy published in 1897 - the book was an immediate success and would be a documentation of Nansen's final expedition. Remarkably, Nansen made significant contributions to Neuroscience research. His doctoral dissertation on the nervous system on lower marine creatures helped provide evidence for Santiago Ramon y Cajal's Neuron Doctrine which eventually led to his Nobel Prize in 1906. Not to be outdone by Ramon y Cajal, Nansen was himself awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for his work on behalf of displaced victims of the first world war. Nansen was a polymath and lived a remarkable life, his recollections of this expedition are fascinating and his books are of interest to collectors of many facets. We could easily have written a description about 5 times this length and would encourage anyone (even if you're not interested in buying this book) to take a look at Nansen's Wikipedia page - it's an extraordinary read. Perhaps given the provenance of these amazing books, the most appropriate way to enjoy these would be with a glass of Haig whiskey.
