Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by Arthur Barbosa (Artur Ernesto Teixeira de Vasconcelos Barbosa) (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear, chipping and small loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed with small loss, some faint spotting and offsetting to endpapers and prelims, small old price in biro to ffep, slight lean. Price clipped, no other inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 268pp. When the new Lady Cardross begins to fill her days with fashion and frivolity, the Earl has to wonder whether she did really only marry him for his money, as his family so helpfully suggests. And now Nell doesn't dare tell him the truth. What with the concern over his wife's heart and pocket, sorting out her brother's scrapes and trying to prevent his own half sister from eloping, it is no wonder that the much tried Earl almost misses the opportunity to smooth the path of true love in his marriage. One of Heyer's sparkling Regency tales.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by Arthur Barbosa (Artur Ernesto Teixeira de Vasconcelos Barbosa) (illustrator). 1st Edition. First published in 1888, this is first UK edition, first impression. Some edge wear, chipping and tiny closed tears to top and bottom of fab retro jacket by Barbosa, corners rubbed with small loss, some slight browning and time staining to back jacket, spine very slightly browned, but overall largely purple jacket quite bright and unsunned. Not price clipped (30s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 633pp. Mostly written during Eca de Queiroz's stay in Bristol in the 1870s, the book mostly concerns the life of young aristocrat Carlos da Maia in 1870s Portugal, when along with his best friend Joao da Ega he spends his time making witticisms about society and having affairs. The novel uses the Monarchy's decline in Portugal during the late 19th century, as a predominant theme, reflecting its author's own regret at his country's slow decay. Analysis of the book is compulsory for year 11 students in Portugal. Portuguese Realist writer Eça de Queiroz's (1845-1900), satire is turned on the emptiness of city life and of modernity itself. Quite a scarce book.

Some edge wear, short closed tears, chipping and loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners and folds rubbed with small loss, some time staining and rubbing to back jacket. Not price clipped (16s), small previous owner's inscription to ffep, very slight lean, internally clean and tight, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 394pp. Adam Deveril, the new Viscount Lynton and a hero of Salamanca, returns from the Peninsula War to find his family on the brink of ruin and the broad acres of his ancestral home mortgaged to the hilt. It is Lord Oversley, father of Adam's first love, who tactfully introduces him to Mr Jonathan Chawleigh, a City man of apparently unlimited wealth with no social ambitions for himself, but with his eyes firmly fixed on a suitable match for his one and only daughter. Classic Georgette Heyer, my favourite amongst her later novels, now quite scarce.
