Volume I of the Sixth Series of Chambers's Journal, covering December 1897 to November 1898, marking the beginning of a new era for one of Britain's longest-running and most respected weekly literary periodicals. Founded by the Scottish publishers William and Robert Chambers in 1832, the journal earne…d a reputation for providing an engaging mixture of fiction, history, travel, biography, science, current affairs and practical knowledge for the educated general reader. This inaugural volume of the Sixth Series also includes the Extra Christmas Number and features the first serial appearance of John Buchan's historical novel John Burnet of Barns (complete in this volume), published several years before the author achieved international fame with The Thirty-Nine Steps. Published by W. and R. Chambers Ltd., London and Edinburgh, 1898. A good, soundly bound hardback, with leather spine and corners and red cloth over boards. Leather scuffed and worn, with raised bands and burgundy and black morocco title labels with gilt. Some cracking at top of joints on spine - the top section has likely been re-glued at some point with small split in leather visible on the spine. Endpapers and a few leaves at either end are spotted, but text is overall clear and bright with a little age-toning. Text in English. Runs from December 1897 to November 1898: viii (Title + Index) + 832pp + 48pp ('Christmas Number'). Dimensions: approximately 258mm x 188mm x 55mm. Weight: Approximately 1890g (unpacked).
