Some very very slight edge wear to top and bottom of green cover and spine, small faint old coffee mark to front cover, publisher's slip with description and reviews tipped in, no inscriptions, spine uncreased, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy, looks unread. 119pp, illustrated. Set in Paris. Tomin's second book is the narrative of a tempestuous Czech artist living of the generosity of his girlfriend whilst struggling with the desire for fame and the alienation of his exile. Born in Czechoslovakia, Lukas Tomin (1963-95), emigrated to England in 1980 with his parents, who were both Charter 77 signatories. Tomin returned from England to his native Prague in 1991, where he wrote and worked for the BBC as a freelance translator. In his short life he published two books, The Doll in 1992 and Ashtrays in 1993, both with Twisted Spoon Press, and a series of poems in London's The Literary Review. Sadly Tomin was found dead at the base of a cliff in Divoka Sarka nature preserve. It is not known whether he slipped or committed suicide. A scarce book. Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Tomin, Lukas. Ashtrays. First edition. Prague: Twisted Spoon Press, 1993. Paperback, Good. Rough grey covers, with minor reading-wear to corners and a few marks along the edge of the page block. Binding firm. 117pp., b/w illustrations throughout by Alf Van der Plank. Set in Paris, Lukas Tomin's second book is the narrative of a tempestuous Czech artist living off the generosity of his girlfriend, struggling with the desire for fame and the alienation of his exile. Writing in an adopted tongue marked by both his native Czech and the French of his setting, Tomin forges an English that is rhythmic, mobile, energetic, and often sharply humorous. Here the extremes of the material and spiritual worlds collide and intersect, creating a space of extreme reality which directly confronts the mundane.
