In seiner Reihe der Bestandskataloge veröffentlicht das Aachener Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum deshalb…nun einen Band zu den Gemälden, die es im Lauf seines Bestehens »verloren« hat. Damit bekräftigt das Haus zugleich seine größtenteils auch heute noch bestehenden Besitzansprüche. Dank der frühzeitig begonnenen fotografischen Dokumentation seiner Bestände auf hochwertigen Glasplatten-Negativen kann das Aachener Museum in diesem Band mit großformatigen Reproduktionen des überwiegenden Teils der Verluste aufwarten. Bei den Verlustgemälden handelt es sich in erster Linie um Werke, die - heute meist subsumiert unter dem Begriff 'Beutekunst' - zum Schutz vor Bombardierungen in die Meißener Albrechtsburg ausgelagert worden waren, wo sie wahrscheinlich unmittelbar nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg von sogenannten 'Trophäenbrigaden' beschlagnahmt und in die Sowjetunion verbracht wurden. Vermutlich auf mehrere der ehemaligen Sowjetrepubliken verteilt, fristen sie nunmehr ein Schattendasein in nicht öffentlich zugänglichen Depots. Wie einschneidend diese Verluste sind, zeigen bereits die Zahlen: von den 576 im Gemäldekatalog von 1932 verzeichneten Werken sind über 200 Nummern verschwunden. Allein die heute noch etwa 200 Stücke zählende Abteilung der niederländischen Malerei aus der Zeit zwischen 1500 und 1800 ist von über 120 Verlusten betroffen.
