Generally believed to have been written by Wilde for the actress Sarah Bernhardt, this play was banned in England, though popular in Paris. Originally published in 1891, this 1945 copyrighted edition was translated from the French by Lord Alfred Douglas, with a new introduction by Holbrook Jackson. Decorated & hand-illuminated by Valenti Angelo especially for this Heritage Press edition. Lavishly decorated, creamy textured doubled pages (uncut at top edge) are beautifully colorful, clean, & unmarked. Embossed black cloth over boards; original slipcase is missing. Starting to tear at both front & rear hinges & there is some light black smudging in both places. The "Sandcastle" insert from the Heritage Club is present.
