The signed first editions of poetic anthologies based off of the First World War: A Friendship, written by writer and suffragette Violet Helen F…riedlaender, and The Spirit of France, written by bishop and poet Charles Lewis Slattery.In the publisher's original quarter cloth, with grey paper boards. Signed inscriptions of the poets on the front free end papers. The Spirit of France contains a frontispiece, and nine illustrated plates relating to the poems. Collated complete.Dedidcated to her father, A Friendship collects many of Friedlaender's poems previously published in Country Life magazine. Friedlaender was a leading figure within the West Ham Women's Social and Political Union, and active in their publisher The Women's Press. She later wrote the novel Mainspring: the Growth of a Soul in 1922. (Published by Country Life in 1919).Containing forty-two sonnets, the Spirit of France celebrates the European country and its rich cultural history, including poems dedicated to Notre Dame, Napoleon's Tomb, Versaille and Louis Pasteur. Of 750 copies printed of this particular edition, this copy is number 498. As the episcopal bishop of Massachussetts, he was known to be more liberal than contemporaries. (Published by Macmillan Company in 1923). In the publisher's original quarter cloth, with grey paper boards. Externally, very smart, with minimal marks to the boards and slight fading to the spines. Marginal rubbing to the spine label of Friendship. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, slightly heavier to tail of spine of Spirit where there is a small split to front joint. End papers are bright and clean, with faint offsetting to free end papers of Friendship. Poets signed inscriptions to the front free end papers.
