Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition black boards, black cloth spine, red front cover lettering, and red spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes To the American Reader, A.A. Ushakov, Washington, D.C., April 1989…; Preface; Epilogue; An Unexpected Happy Ending; and Appendix: Record of Confiscation. Illustrated with black-and-white map. Translated from the Russian by Alexander Cook. "He knew he was about to be arrested by the KGB. He was neither a dissident nor a member of an ethnic minority, but he was an underground anti-communist. He was a professor at the Odessa Naval Academy, and he was being investigated for his unpublished "anti-Soviet" writings. In addition, his first wife had denounced him as an enemy of the state. For Alexander Ushakov, the most dramatic episode of his life was about to begin. He set out on a perilous journey that only an handful of his fellow citizens had ever completed - an attempt to cross the heavily guarded Soviet-Turkish border in the Caucasus Mountains. For nearly three weeks Ushakov struggled on foot through mountains and forests, only once encountering another human being. Numb from the cold, rain, and snow, bruised by branches and the underbrush, Ushakov sloughed his way to the border until, at last, after being chased by Soviet soldiers and with helicopters in hot pursuit, he reached Turkey and sanctuary. Ushakov also offers a thorough analysis of the Soviet system which he has fled, and gives his provocative impressions of America, where he is now settled. His book is above all the story of a brave man and of an astonishing flight to freedom." - from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: ALexander Ushakov was born in the USSR in 1946. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Leningrad State University in 1979, and was Associate Professor of Marxism-Leninism at the Odessa Naval Academy before he defected in 1984. Now a specialist with the FOreign Service Institute of the State Department, he lives in Arlington, Virginia, with his second wife, Irina. - from the inner rear jacket flap. Anthony, Robert (jacket design) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. xi, [1], 273, [1] pages. Footnotes. Inscribed by the author. Inscription reads "To Kemton Jenkins with best wishes, A. A. Ushakov." A proud Foreign Service Officer, Kemton Jenkins "Jenks," had a varied and distinguished career. He served in the foreign service an…d with the Department of State for 30 years. He was a Russian specialist, and was posted to both Berlin and Moscow in the late 1950's and early 1960's during the height of the Berlin Crisis and Cuban Missile Crisis. For a time he was the Director of the US Information Agency. He served as Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations under Henry Kissinger. Mr. Jenkins wrote a book about this period, "The Cold War Saga", which was published in 2010. Ushakov relates the dramatic story of his spectacular escape from the Soviet Union. He attempted to cross the Turkish border in the Caucasus Mountains against insurmountable odds. His success came three weeks later, after being relentlessly pursued by helicopters and soldiers. Derived from Publishers' Weekly: In the winter of 1984 the author, a university professor in Odessa, learned that he was to be arrested for his anti-Soviet views. He struck off into the Caucasus mountains, breached the heavily guarded Soviet-Turkish border and eventually made his way to the U.S., settling in Virginia. His account of the trek is a remarkable adventure story, but there are two other elements that are equally interesting: his scathing denunciation of the Soviet system, which is at the same time a detailed reminiscence of life in a country he calls "a kingdom of unmarked graves, dungeons, and concentration camps"; and his delighted views on America. Ushakov is a contentious fellow of strong opinions and a rollicking sense of humor. For all his prickly humor and thunderous condemnations, the book offers a fresh view of conditions in the Soviet Union in the early 1980s and blunt predictions about the death of Marxism. First edition. Stated. Presumed first printing.
