In this comprehensive study, Arthur W. Helweg and Usha M. Helweg examine the new type of immigrant gaining prominence in world migration streams. Educated, technically~trained professionals, they rapidly enter the middle and upper ranks of their new country and soon have an impact on its political and social fabric as well as on that of their former society. Focusing on the Asian Indian community, the Helwegs trace the immigrants' stories from their decision to leave India through their arrival in and adjustment to America, and include a discussion of the situation faced by those who return to India. This work is unique not only because it concentrates on the educated and chronicles the complete migration cycle from emigration to return, but also because it sets forth an interactional process which includes the ongoing relationships between the sending and receiving communities. The book also analyzes the impact Indian~American immigration has on both countries in the realms of the "brain~drain," internal politics, international relations, and economic development. Based on case studies, the book is designed to be of interest to non~academic readers while making theoretical contributions to anthropology, sociology, geography, migration studies, ethnic studies, and South Asian studies.
