Wie meist in ihren Liedkompositionen wählte Mamlok Verse über Natur und unser Dasein im Verhältnis zu ihr - hier eine Anrufung des Windes in seinen verschiedenen Spielarten, dessen Macht nur am Ende auf dem Friedhof in einem sanften Seufzer verhaucht. Eine Ausnahme bildet der Rückblick für Saxophon und Klavier, den sie 2002 im Auftrag der Temple University zur Erinnerung an die Reichspogromnacht schrieb. Stärker als in ihren anderen Werken aus jener Zeit ist der Kontrast zwis…chen langsamen und schnellen Sätzen herausgearbeitet - letztere erhalten etwas Getriebenes, der Klavierpart nimmt für Augenblicke eine sonst nicht gekannte Härte an. Gegen Ende des dritten Satzes werden sangliche und flüchtige Gesten unvermittelt aneinander gedrängt. Der erste schnelle Satz entsteht aus der Zerstörung versuchter Kantabilität. Die Elegie (2. Satz) erstirbt mit einer vierfachen Erinnerung an ihr Anfangsmotiv, der letzte Ansatz bleibt Fragment. In 1958, at the time of composition of the piece, the composer had just completed her studies at the Manhattan School of Music. In the follo…wing years, while studying with Stefan Wolpe and Ralph Shapey, she turned towards serial technique and developed the style which was to become typical of her in later decades. Cantata is also a musical testimony to a transitional period and takes a special - and very interesting - position, not least because choral compositions are rare in Mamlok's oeuvre. The one-movement composition of almost seven minutes' duration is based on Psalm 1 in English. Like a ritornello, the word 'Blessed' recurs several times, characteristically harmonized with fourth chords. The choral movement is quite varied and unfolds to up to eight parts. Solos emerge periodically from all voice groups. Homophonic sections contrast with thematically fragmented and imitative sections, accompanied sections with a cappella sections. Allerdings eine äußerst reizvolle. Der etwa 7-minütigen, einsätzigen Komposition liegt der 1. Psalm in englischer Sprache zugrunde. Ritornellartig kehrt das Wort 'Blessed' wieder, mit Quartakkorden charakteristisch harmonisiert. Der Chorsatz ist äußerst vielfältig und bis zu achtstimmig aufgefächert. Immer wieder treten Soli aus allen Stimmgruppen hervor. Homophone kontrastieren mit durchbrochenen und imitatorischen Abschnitten, begleitete mit a cappella gesungenen. Interessant ist auch die Instrumentalstimme, die nicht nur den Gesang begleitet, sondern individuell und in wechselhafter Gestaltung hervortritt.Schwierigkeitsgrad: 5.
