Add to basketThis letter gives insight into the fervid activity of major scientists to assess the qualities of rubber/caoutchouc. Four pages, 16mo, bifolium, remains of glue on edge (sl. obscuring some words), mainly good. Text: "Dr. Ure presents his compliments to Dr Royle, and begs to ask him if he has any recent intelligence cioncerning caoutchouc in addition to what may be found in the Asiatic Society Journal of Calcutta - the numnber of which for February contains Mr Griffith's instructive paper upon the Ficus Elastica of Assam and the mode of obtaining its juice - Dr. Ure would be glad to make some analytical experiments upon the native milky juice could a good specimen of it be found in London - Perhaps Dr Royle is aware that Dr U[re] first showed the absence of oxygen in the concrete caoutchouc of commerce, a result afterwards confirmed br Dr. Faraday - Dr U[re] being in possession of peculiar and very rapid methods of chemical research (not yet published) would like to try them upon the caoutchouc juice. Whatever information Dr. U. can procure he intends to publish in an Appendix to his Dict[ionar]y of Arts &c now issuing monthly from the press - & will acknowledge the favour of any kind contribution.".

2nd edition. 2 volumes. Illustrated with plates. 8vo. 8-1/2" x 5-1/8" Claude Louis Berthollet was most noted for applying the [then] newly-discovered oxygenated muriatic acid to vegetable colors for the purpose of bleaching. The revolutionary results of Berthollet's experiments, conducted in collaboration with his son, A. B. Berthollet, were first published in 1791, in their "Elemens de l'Art de la Teinture." In 1809, Berthollet published a second edition of his work which included many important modifications & additions. The Scottish chemist Andrew Ure translated this second edition, appending his own notes & additional illustrative plates. Ure's edition, here offered, included details of the newest research on dyeing & dyestuffs, particularly the discoveries of J. B. Vitalis which appeared in his "Cours Elementaire de Teinture" [Paris, 1823]. In addition, the plates contributed by Ure depicted some of the newest machinery used in the active English dyeing establishments of the period. Ure also included a table for converting French weights & measures into the English equivalents. VG (some chipping to title labels/avg wear/usual foxing). Overall, a respectable set in the original cloth. Original publisher's ribbon-embossed cloth with printed paper title labels to spine.
