Item description from seller

2 volumes. Illustrated with plates. 8vo. 8-1/2" x 5-1/8" Claude Louis Berthollet was most noted for applying the [then] newly-discovered oxygenated muriatic acid to vegetable colors for the purpose of bleaching. The revolutionary results of Berthollet's experiments, conducted in collaboration with his son, A. B. Berthollet, were first published in 1791, in their "Elemens de l'Art de la Teinture." Vitalis which appeared in his "Cours Elementaire de Teinture" [Paris, 1823]. In addition, the plates contributed by Ure depicted some of the newest machinery used in the active English dyeing establishments of the period. Ure also included a table for converting French weights & measures into the English equivalents. VG (some chipping to title labels/avg wear/usual foxing). Overall, a respectable set in the original cloth. Original publisher's ribbon-embossed cloth with printed paper title labels to spine.…
