E, data la generalità del precetto,…e la necessità imposta dalla nostra fede non solo di riconoscere le nostre colpe, ma di confessarle, o a Dio direttamente, o ai fratelli o al sacerdote, per ottenerne il perdono, a noi oggi la prescrizione dell'esame di coscienza, conditio sine qua non di una buona confessione, sembra cosi semplice, che uomini, donne e fanciulli la comprendono e la praticano comunemente. Ma non fu così nei tempi antichi; nei quali quel precetto, limitato solo al primo elemento della trilogia penitenziale, e quindi vuoto di ogni contenuto religioso, e imperniato solo su di uno squisitissimo bisogno etico, non fu sentito e praticato che da pochi spiriti eletti. Fin dai più antichi tempi, invero, la filosofia aveva raccomandato l'esame di coscienza come una scuola di mortificazione e di elevazione dell'anima: forse lo stesso Nosce te ipsum del tempio di Delfo non era che la sintesi epigrafica di una simile diuturna pratica spirituale. Ma il significato, pur così chiaro, del precetto sfuggì anche a molti di coloro che erano o si credevano i depositari delle dottrine dei saggi e dei filosofi.".
