Saddle-stitched. First Edition. Octavo, 72 pages. In Very Good minus condition. Aged white and burgundy covers with black, blue, burgundy, and white designs and black lettering on the front cover. Covers have mild shelving wear, indents on the rear cover, light chipping along the extremities, and moderate age-toning along the extremities. Textblock has small white stains on the cover interiors, mild wear along the edges, and moderate age-toning along the edges. ABS consignment. Shelved Room B. "Black Orpheus" was founded by German expatriate professor and editor Ulli Beier in 1957 in an attempt to highlight African and Afro-American writers. Based in Ibadan, Nigeria, "Black Orpheus" would run until 1975 and included prominent writers such as Wole Soyinka, John Pepper Clark, and Aimé Césaire. The magazine's influence reverberated beyond its African origins and into the West, where it highlighted the importance of African art in American archives. 1395075. Special Collections.
