Hardcover. Condition: As new. Quarto. Hardcover. Black cloth in illustrated jacket. 144 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 26 cm. An engaging account of Britain's greatest painter, told through works from the Yale Center for British Art's extensive collection Joseph Mallord William Turner (17751851) is one of the most recog…nizable names in the history of British art. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1802, Turner broke new ground with his oils, watercolors, and prints. His landscapes and marine paintings are widely considered the crowning achievement of British Romantic art. This book, the inaugural installment in the Yale Center for British Art's Collection Series, explores the museum's astonishing Turner holdingsthe largest outside the United Kingdomin a manner that will engage the general reader and expert alike. Six sections of plates provide a comprehensive overview of the artist's career, place the works within their historical and cultural context, and include new discoveries regarding the identification of locations, landscapes, and dates. Gillian Forrester's supplementary essay offers a novel account of Turner's innovative printmaking practice, illuminating his fraught collaborations with other printmakers. Complementing an exhibition at the YCBA and a satellite exhibition at the Dordrechts Museum (The Netherlands), both planned for the 250th year of Turner's birth, this publication celebrates the artist's unparalleled vision as exemplified in the YCBA's world-class collection of his work.

Exhibition catalogue. First edition first impression 1997. 215x270mm 286 pages with index. 96 colour 120 black and white illustrations. Paperback. Very good indeed. On Turner's journey through Brittany and up the River Loire, he filled several sketchbooks with impressions of famous Loire chateaux, such as Amboise, Blois, Chambor…d and Saumur. Many of his sketches are identified and reproduced in this volume, together with all of the celebrated watercolours that Turner produced to be engraved in 1833. Several of these were later owned by John Ruskin, and the text examines the influence Turner's drawings had on Ruskin and his followers. Turner was at the forefront of an invasion of the Loire region by artists, most of whom were British, as is plain from illustrated examples by contemporaries such as Samuel Prout, William Callow and Clarkson Stanfield, as well as views by French artists like Delacroix. We are specialists in Artists Monographs, Catalogues and Illustrated items. All items are as described and dispatched within 24 hours in a secure package. We are professional booksellers with nearly 40 years experience, you may order with confidence. Other titles by this artist maybe in stock, please ask for our list or link.

Laid in is the colour illustrated guide to the exhibition mounted by Petworth House and Park on the 6th July 2002 International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 K…ilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition at Petworth House to mark the restoration of the Carved Room where J.M.W. Turner's paintings will be reinstated in their original positions in the panelling. Petworth House was a special place for Turner, both as the home of his great patron, Lord Egremont, and as the scene of many happy visits. Turner recorded the beauties of the great English house in over 100 gouache drawings and for the house itself he painted, among other things, four landscapes to hang in the Carved Room. This book celebrates Turner's relationship with Petworth and its owner through the reproduction of over 150 works, prefaced by thematic essays written by scholars from the National Trust and Tate. 21 cm x 26.9 cm. 72 pages. With black and white and colour illustrations. Original Softcover. Very good+ condition with only minor signs of external wear. Only very minor discolouration to page margins. Otherwise very clean and bright. Includes for example the following artwork by Turner: Shields, on the River Tyne 1823 / Roches…ter, on the River Medway 1822 / Venice, The Ducal Palace 1827 / The Artist and his Admirers 1827 / The Old Library: A Vase of Lillies, Dahlias and Other Flowers 1827 / Genoa from the Sea c.1828 etc. This book is the fourth in a series focusing on Turner's watercolours and drawings from successive decades of his life. In this period 1820-1830 Turner was at the peak of his maturity, involved in a wide range of projects. As an illustrator for publications, such as the 'Rivers of England', the 'Ports of England', the 'Picturesque Views in England and Wales' and Roger's 'Italy', he created designs that reached an ever-increasing public and have proved to be of enduring appeal. At the centre of the decade are Turner's experiments with colour, including evocative studies of sunrise and sunset light, as well as watercolours for the 'Little Liber', pursued in conjunction with his own remarkable mezzotints. During the decade, Turner travelled extensively abroad, and many subjects catalogued here chart his journeys in France and Italy. Notable among numerous drawings of England made in these years are a group of the studies painted at Petworth, some of Turner's most colourful, spontaneous and personal creations. (From cover notes) Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (1775-1851), known contemporarily as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. (Wikipedia) Sprache: english.
