Embossed gold Marine logo on the front. Light red inked underlining on most of the following pages: 35-57, 233-277, 291,313, 346-351,361-372, and 379-383. The underlining was very…neatly done with a ruler. Very slightly concave spine and lightly bumped front corners. Beyond this is a tight bright As New book with no other defects noted. During the period covered in this Volume 3 a great deal was learned about amphibious warfare. The soundness of the doctrine developed in the prewar years by dedicated Navy and Marine Corps officers. Anticipating the demands of a vast naval campaign they developed requirements and tested prototypes for the landing craft and vehicles that began to appear in large numbers at the time of the Central Pacific battles. Two converging drives on the core of Japanese defenses, one mounted in the Southwest Pacific under General Macarthur's command, the other in the Central Pacific under Admiral Nimitz. The Central Pacific operations began at Tarawa in late 1943 and continued into the Gilberts, Marshalls and Marianas. The Marine Corps brought to the war the priceless ingredient developed during the years of peace and that was the amphibious doctrines and techniques that made possible the trans-Pacific advance. Contents in Six Parts: Launching the Central Pacific Offensive, The Gilberts Operation, The Marshalls Quickening the Pace, Saipan The Decisive Battle, Assault on Tinian, and The Return to Guam. Nine Appendices: Bibliographical Notes, Guide to Abbreviations, Military Map Symbols, Chronology, Fleet Marine Force Status 30 October 1943, Table of Organization F-100 Marine Division, Marine Task Organization and Command List, Marine Casualties, and Unit Commendations. There are 50 Photographic Illustrations and there are 31 Maps included within the text pages Tucked away in a special section at the back of the book are eight detailed and flawless Fold-Out maps. The Map Titles are: Scene of Battle 1943-1944, Betio Island Showing Main Japanese Defenses, Betio Island Landing and Situation 1800 20 November, Betio Island Situation 1800 D+3, Roi and Namur Islands Japanese Defenses Based on Post-Battle Study, Banzai Attack, W-Day on Guam 21 July 1944, and Japanese Counterattack Plan 25-25 July 1944.
