Rückseite, ? Shanghai, Februar 1900. 1200 gr. Schlagworte: Photographie - Reisephotographie, China.…

Tuck Tai's famous panorama, datable to the later 1890s by the presence of the towering Western-style customs house, which was erected on the site of an old temple in 1893. While little is known about Tuck Tai himself, he set the standard for photography in late 19th-century Shanghai, and his panoramas were expensive, but desirable, souvenirs and gifts. The eight panels of this example embrace a 250-degree perspective and show the following views and features: Panel 1: looking south towards the Chinese city. Panel 2: the Quai de Wampoo. Panel 3: the end of the French Settlement and the beginning of the British settlement. The majestic Shanghai Club building (torn down in 1909) appears in the centre, and also visible is the time ball, which was erected in 1884. In the distance is the steeple of St Joseph's Catholic Church. The paddle steamer Ichang is moored in the river. Panel 4: the central portion of the Bund, showing the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank and the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank buildings, as well as the customs house. Panel 5: the large Jardine, Matheson building in front of a water tower, as well as the manicured waterfront. In the foreground is the River Police Station. Panel 6: the British consulate on the far left, the public gardens, and the bandstand. Behind the Garden Bridge, which stretches over Soochow Creek, is the Astor House hotel. On the far right are the German and Japanese consulates. Panel 7: the Nippon Yusen Kaisha warehouses. Panel 8: the eastern extremity of Shanghai, including Jardine's Associated Wharves. The road on the right leads to the countryside. 8 albumen photographs (c.195 x 280 mm) mounted on board, recently rejoined concertina-style with white linen tape, black half sheep covers, green cloth sides, covers tooled in gilt. Covers marked and with light wear, front board bowed, original title label no longer present, occasional marking internally, final panel with line in image as usual: very good.…

Accordion. Condition: Very good. A panorama of the Shanghai Bund, the waterfront area within the former Shanghai International Settlement. Many of the buildings originally served as offices and trading houses from the many countries then allowed to trade with China: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, and more. Kung Tai (Tuck Tai, Gong Tai) photographed this waterfront area as it was changing and growing. There are different versions of his album offered online as customers could choose various pictures to be included in "their" album. This example contains eight albumen prints on the rectos (versos all blank) and was apparently owned by someone who lived in the area - one of the pencil notations (the fourth panel) states "In background see am consulate flag, We live next door". This album appears to be dated prior to 1893; another pencil notation (same panel) states "Custom House about to be rebuilt". A date as early as 1890 is probable given another pencil annotation (third panel) which states "Russell & Co., American house, lately failed". Per Wiki, Russell & Co. began encountering financial difficulties in the 1870s, and "in 1877 they [Russell & Co.] were acquired by the China Merchants Steam Navigation Company alongside their waterfront properties. Facing further financial difficulties, the company devolved into Shewan & Company in 1891." There was a prior attempt to date the album; at the top of the first panel is written "CA 1882 (?)" which may be too early. The notations beneath each panel include: panel one, "Chinese City & Suburbs of Shanghai", "Tugboats", "One of the Yangtze River steamers which run to Hankow", and "China Merchant Co's Wharves, Steamers, & Ware houses"; panel two, "French Settlement" (written above the photograph) and "French mail steamer" (written below); panel three, "English Club House", "Russell & Co., American house, lately failed", and "English Gunboat"; straddling panels three and four, "Hong Kong & Shanghai bank"; panel four, "Customs House, about to be rebuilt", "Char.(?) Mercantile Bank", "In background, see am Consulate flag, We live next door", and "Central Hotel"; panel five, "Water works tower" and "Public gardens"; straddling panels five and six, "German (?) Consulate"; panel six, "The house we move into next month - Sept" (the writing is difficult, this is our best assessment), and "Japan Co.'s wharves & ware houses"; panel seven contains no notation; and panel eight contains only "English mail steamer" and "German mail steamer". ___DESCRIPTION: Eight albumen prints mounted onto heavy cardboard and bound concertina-style between two boards covered with blue pebbled cloth and with red leather in the style of a half-leather binding, a red leather label mounted onto the front board with a decorative gilt border and in gilt "Shanghai Bund (straight rule) Kung Tai. Photographer.", pencil annotations throughout as described above; oblong quarto size (10 7/8" wide by 8 7/8" tall), containing only the eight albument prints. Housed in a new custom clamshell box to match, with blue cloth boards and outer edges and quarter red leather, the title and photographer in gilt lettering on the spine, the inside lined with archival ivory paper. ___CONDITION: Very good overall: the boards are firmly attached with overall light wear and some soil, the panels still firmly attached although a few are just beginning to separate, some lightening to the vertical margins (perhaps caused by offsetting from the adhesive tape on the versos used for binding), the albumen prints overall in very good condition with one (panel two) having an old vertical tear which (sadly) had been "mended" with tape by a prior owner, we had a professional (name available upon request) remove that old tape and clean both the recto and verso, with new japanese tape now on the verso and some very light infilling done on the photograph. The new custom box is fine. A fascinating glimpse into the Shanghai Bund of well over a century ago.…

An early example of Tuck Tai's famous Shanghai Bund panorama, showing the old customs house (a repurposed temple) between the grandiose buildings of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank and the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank. The majority of Tuck Tai panoramas post-date 1893, the year in which the temple was demolished and replaced with a western-style building. This example was issued by Tai's studio with additional photographs on the verso. While little is known about Tuck Tai himself, he set the standard for photography in late 19th-century Shanghai, and his panoramas were expensive, but desirable, souvenirs and gifts. The eight panels of this example show the following views and features: Panel 1: looking south towards the Chinese city. Panel 2: the Quai de Wampoo. Panel 3: the end of the French Settlement and the beginning of the British settlement. The majestic Shanghai Club building (torn down in in 1909) appears in the centre, and also visible is the time ball, which was erected in 1884. Tuck Tai's patrons could opt to have additional photographs from the studio mounted on the verso of their panorama. The first here, a view of Shanghai's eastern environs drawn from another panorama, is annotated "our house" above. Others include a view down Fuzhou Road (on the right is the building of Zhongxi Da Yaofang, a veteran pharmacy), a bustling market either in Hongkou or on Ninghai East Road, portraits of merchants and a passenger in a rickshaw, and a shot of a convict chain gang. 8 albumen photographs (c.195 x 280 mm) mounted on board and joined concertina-style with linen tape, black quarter sheep boards, light black morocco-grain cloth sides, covers tooled in gilt, front board with red title label lettered and tooled in gilt. Six albumen photographs of similar size mounted on verso, as issued. Panorama with contemporary pencil annotations at head of mounts. Light bowing as often, covers worn, gently recoloured, damp stain at head of rear board, foxing and light fading to panorama photos: a very good example.…

Concertina album containing 20 albumen prints, each measuring ca. 27,2x20cm. Bound in half-calf, photographer's blue morocco label on upper board (hinges restored), a few of the images slightly spotted, minor wear, but overall very good, dark-toned images. Shanghai, Tuck Tai,  The 'Shanghai Jubilee' referred to in the title is Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee which was celebrated throughout the empire and the treaty ports in 1897. Most of the photographs feature important houses and Jubilee decorations along the Bund, the prestigious boulevard along the waterfront. Images include the British Consulate, the China Merchant Bank, Imperial Maritime Customs Building, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, as well as the Shanghai Club. Tuck Tai's dates are still unknown, but he was a prominent Chinese photographer in Shanghai in the last twenty years of the 19th century and he became famous for his large panoramic views of the Bund. His studio was called De Tai zhao xiang guan and Tuck Tai is the Shanghai transliteration for the first two characters. Uncommon. …
