Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Minus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. This book is signed and inscribed by the editor/translator, Duan Liancheng, on the blank verso of the map illustrated first front end paper. It is inscribed to 'Mr. William F. McCalpin'. I'm sure he actually meant the American attorney F. William McCalpin. You can read a little bit about him below. Underneath this dated inscription the editor/translator also wrote the following 'Please forward another copy sent herewith to Mr. David Rockefeller with whom I had the honor to meet and chat about this book at the Nov. 25 banquet. Thanks.' Duan Liancheng's card is also in the book. As you can see from the photographs the covers have a little bit of wear, a wrinkle at the front top right-hand corner, a little bit of soiling on the front, and a thin scratch. The spine is slanted forward, however the book is very solidly bound. The pages are very clean, with the exception of one which has several fingerprints in the white margins. That page also has what appears to be two lightly penciled underlinings, but I think they may just be a defect in the print. There is no other extraneous writing, underlining, etc. to be found anywhere in the book. And no one, with the exception of the editor/translator's inscription and signature, has written their name or anything else. There are no markings in this book. No attachments. There are eight pages of black and white photographs. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photographs. It has some light spotting, but is otherwise in very solid condition. I've had the jacket in a fitted protective cover as long as I've owned the book. There is a nice blue ribbon in the book. China Daily is quoted on the front flap: 'American Kaleidoscope is both critical and affectionate portrait of that country's people and places. It is an accomplishment that not only educates but entertains and generates admiration.' F. William McCalpin (8 November 1921 - 9 December 2009) was an American attorney, who throughout his career was a strong advocate for legal services within the American Bar Association. He was involved in a variety of leadership positions supporting both the private bar and legal services. He was named Chair twice of the national Legal Services Corporation and served on that organization's board of directors across four decades. Hillary Clinton, who served as Chair of the Legal Services Corporation between McCalpin's two terms as Chair, wrote of him, "He was an extraordinary man, a valued mentor and a true champion for equal justice and access to legal services for the poor. Through his work Bill changed lives and made an indelible impact upon the legal community." He was awarded in 1988 the American Bar Association Medal, awarded to recognize "exceptionally distinguished service by a lawyer to the cause of American jurisprudence." The F. William McCalpin Pro Bono Award, given by the Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, is named for him. In addition, Legal Services of Eastern Missouri dedicated the F. Wm. McCalpin Wall of Justice in 1999. On November 19, 2010, the Legal Services Corporation dedicated its Conference Center Washington, DC, to McCalpin, formally naming it in his honor.
