A veces la trampa puede ser mortal. Los falsos amigos son los verdaderos enemigos del traductor porque constituyen la negación misma de su trabajo. Aquéllos confunden los conceptos: el traductor debe conocer y respetar el significado exacto de las palabras. Aquéllos utilizan el significante como máscara: el traductor debe desenmascarar el mensaje, liberarlo de las contingencias de su expresión para reformarlo a su vez y darle vida en otra lengua. Aquéllos crean confusión: la magnífica labor del traductor consiste en crear (o al menos transmitir) significado.
