The story of the horse and its evolution and domestication from 'dawn horse Eohippus' to the famous thoroughbred racehorse Eclipse. Artist, author and journalist Gwendolen Trew (1897-1958), was born Cecil Gwendolen St Leger Russell (familiarly known as Gwen) and became Cecil Gwendolen Trew on her marriage to an American physician, Niel Charles Trew in 1918. She became Mrs Cecil Gwendolen Ehrenborg on her second marriage, to Rolf Killigrew Ehrenborg in London, in December 1932. However, even after her second marriage, she continued to use Cecil G. Trew as her professional name, both as a writer and as an artist. The American bred Eclipse (1764-89), was an undefeated 18th century thoroughbred racehorse who won 18 races, including 11 King's Plates. He raced before the introduction of the British Classic Races, at a time when four mile heat racing was the norm. He was considered the greatest racehorse of his time and the expression 'Eclipse first, the rest nowhere' entered the English vernacular as an expression of dominance. After retiring from racing, he became a very successful sire, whose offspring included three Epsom Derby winners, Young Eclipse, Saltram and Serjeant. He was also a successful sire of sires, and his sire line has become dominant in the modern Thoroughbred worldwide through descendants such as Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector and Sunday Silence. Quite a scarce book. Jacket and illustrations by the author (illustrator).…
