Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. Trevor Denning (dust jacket illustration) (illustrator). First Edition. 8vo. Pp. 282. Bound in bright red cloth with black lettering and rules stamped on spine. Cloth is mottled, as with other copies we've seen (likely a production flaw), and with a dampstain on the front board. In the illustrated dust jacket that shows dampstain on the front panel; slight edge-wear. Inscribed by Silvette on the front free endpaper. Inscription in green ink reads, "To Paul Jordan Smith with kindest regards [signed] Herbert Silvette / [unintelligible] Stanardsville, VA 10 Jan. '58". Jordan-Smith was the American lecturer and scholar of English literature whose art movement, "Disumbrationism," was eventually revealed as a hoax. Wilbur Jordan Smith, his son, ran UCLA Special Collections from 1950s-1970 or so. The dust jacket, illustrated by Trevor Denning, is now preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.

Hardback: 7½" x 5". Condition: Good: Moderate signs of wear. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Cover Art: Trevor Denning (illustrator). 1st Edition. © 1957: A stand-alone novel by John Christopher. 1st edition, 1st printing hardback. A part of the 'Novels Of Tomorrow' series of books. Ex-library book with markings to inside front cover. Cover was taped to book at some stage, but is now loose. Old tape marks to inside boards & light foxing to text block. Protected by new Brodart jacket cover:- Synopsis: The title of this 'Novel Of Tomorrow' gives a pretty clear idea of the plot: but it gives no hint of the exciting quality of the story, nor of its originality. For it is original to forgo all the well-tried familiar science-fiction properties - Space-Travel, Time-Travel, Super-Gadgets and Super-men and be content with England's green and pleasant land. It is original for an author to open his story leisurely, with such loving detail; to give the reader ample time to know and like the characters; to remember how beautiful England is; to hold back so skilfully and for so long his author's knowledge of the horrors to come. But the trick makes the book. The reader is invited, as it were, to come for a gay sleigh-ride with the characters: and, as the party glides off, the slope is so gentle that the sleigh scarcely seems to move. But already, to right and left, the look of the land is changing, and all of a sudden the reader finds himself breathless with excitement, racing down a dangerous hill at top speed, escaping danger and disaster at every turn and curve. And it is not only the landscape which alters. The characters reshape themselves under the reader's eyes and not until the final moment of the wild adventure does he know whether the end will be total wreck or a safe slowing down in a land where the grass once more grows green and pleasant:- (original cost 10'6).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by Trevor Denning (illustrator). 1st Edition. First published in 1962, this is a fourth impression of 1964, a tribute to Dick Francis' popularity. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some overall yellowing, some spotting to page block, old tape marks and spotting to endpapers, not price clipped (16s), some stamped numbers to ffep but not ex library, internally clean tight and almost square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 206pp. Alan York, an amateur jockey, finds himself tangling dangerously with a ruthless gang of crooks. A pretty girl, an intelligent child, and a manhunt across the Sussex countryside are some of the ingredients in this gripping thriller about the shady side of the racing world. The background is superbly authentic and the pace would not shame a two mile hurdle race. Dick Francis' (1920-2010), debut thriller, very scarce even in this slightly later impression.
