Traven was a pseudonymous novelist (presumably German) whose most famous book was The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1927), inspiring the 1948 film of the same name that won three Academy Awards. The Cotton Pickers was his first book, published originally in 1926. It is set in Mexico in the 1920s, in the struggle of the emerging trade unions to end the exploitation of hungry laborers. Social injustice and the strength of human courage and dignity are consistent themes. Over the years, the mystery of his identity has generated more theories than the number of his books (12) which have been published. His books have been published in many languages. Traven's novels and short stories became very popular as early as the interwar period and retained this popularity after the Second World War; they were also translated into many languages. Most were published first in German, with their English editions appearing later; nevertheless, the author always claimed that the English versions were the original ones and that the German versions were only their translations.…

First U.S. edition. First publication of Traven's own English-language translation of DAS TOTENSCHIFF (1926), his first novel. The novel was first published in English by Chatto & Windus, utilizing an English text prepared by Eric Sutton. The UK edition preceded Knopf's edition by several months, but the first American edition, with text translated and revised by Traven, is the preferred version of the novel. A fine copy in very good printed dust jacket with touch of wear at spine ends and corner tips, some age-darkening to spine panel, some minor general dust soiling, and clipped price. Overall, an attractive example of the jacket, which is uncommon in nice condition. In custom open-face cloth slipcase. (#77517). …
