Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dustjacket. Auguste Rodin -- the greatest sculptor of the nineteenth century -- was also probably the greatest since Michelangelo, whose genius was a lifelong inspiration to him. Though the astonishing lifelike quality of his sculpture (first apparent in Bronze Age, 1877) was in total defiance of current academic conventions, Rodin did not have to face the prolonged and bitter hostility meted out to the Impressionist painters who were his contemporaries, and in later life he became a famous and widely respected figure . In this important new monograph, Bernard Champigneulle analyses Rodin's great significance as an innovator in sculpture. For Rodin created an entirely new form -- the detail considered as a finished work -- and in doing so exercised a lasting influence on his successors, who were affected equally profoundly by his emotional expressiveness, his power of characterization and the subtlety of his modelling. M. Champigneulle combines a searching reappraisal of Rodin's achievement with a revealing account of his personality and of his troubled personal life.

Leni Riefenstahl spent 16 weeks with the Nuba of Kau in 1975. These people, known as the "South East Nuba", live only 100 miles away from the Mesakin Nuba. Yet, they speak another language, follow different customs, and are very different in character and temperament. Their knife-fights, dances of love and elaborately painted faces and bodies are represented in the book.

They have no victories to celebrate, but they've elevated to a mystique the desperate comradeship of their last days in Hitler's army. It gradually becomes apparent that more than this binds them. From the major industrialist to the minor thug in the group, the memory of one of their, last acts together during the war keeps them to-together. It transcended the brutalities of battle. A teenage prostitute, evidently a willing one, had nevertheless been killed and the murder framed on an unpopular comrade whose death had been engineered. Some of them know or guess all the details. However, when the supposedly dead soldier turns up alive, the reaction goes from comic fear to savage guilt. Kirst shows how each character responds to the impact of guilt renewed and how the disintegration of the group subtracts from individual identity. Hans Hellmut Kirst (1914-89), was a distinguished German novelist and the author of over forty thrillers, including 'Night of the Generals' which was made into a film. Quite a scarce book.
