Contact seller4-star sellerHardbound. Revised from 1947 edition. Black cloth with white glossy illustrated dustjacket. 347 pp., 184 illustrations including 24 tippied-in plates in color. From the dj: if any work can be called "definitive" it is the present volume; not only was the text written by one of the most influential figures in 20th-century art, bu…t it also includes a remarkable section of theoretical writings by Gris, an important testament of Cubist aesthetics. After the first edition sold out, it is now republished in a more generous format, the contents expanded to include a large number of new illustrations, including many color plates. In addition, a catalog raisonne of the artist's graphic work appears here for the first time. Contents as follows: The life of Juan Gris -- Rue Ravignan -- Gris' youth -- The pre-war yars -- The war years, 1914-1920 -- First illness -- Boulogne-sur-Seine -- Interlude: the Russian ballets -- Last years of work and death of Juan Gris -- The work of Juan Gris -- Aesthetica in Nuce -- Historia in Nuce -- Madrid -- First contacts with painting -- The birth of Cubism -- Juan Gris begins to paint -- The end of analytical Cubism -- Papiers collés and synthetic Cubism -- Architecture -- Poetry -- Polyphony -- Sculptures, drawings and engravings -- Theatrical designs -- Recapitulation -- Conclusion -- Writings of Juan Gris -- On Negro art -- Notes on my painting -- On the possibilities of painting -- Reply to the questionnaire: "Chez les Cubistes" -- Reply to a questionnaire. VG in a tattered dustjacket, presentation copy from the author to noted collectors Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Rothschild, dated 1969.
More imagesJuan Gris: his life and work. This is the first book about Juan Gris in the English language.Gris studied engineering at the Madrid School of Arts and Manufactures from 1902 to 1904, but he soon began making drawings for newspapers in the sensuously curvilinear Art Nouveau style. He moved to Paris in 1906 and settled at the Bateau-Lavoir, an artists' dwelling where his compatriot Pablo Picasso lived.Gris was also heavily inspired by the Cubism movement that was just kicking off. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque became friends of the young Gris and were to be the most influential mentors for his artistic development.
