Illustrated by Gustave Doré with 86 full page illustrations, numerous smaller illustrations, and a portrait frontispiece. Handsomely bound in full calf with elaborate gilt decoration to spine and decorative gilt borders to boards. Marbled endpapers and page edges. pp. lxiv, 839. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. The binding is in good shape with gilt bright; slight fading to the spine; light rubbing to joints and cracking to top 1" of joint between spine and upper board; some scratches, indentations and damp-staining to the boards. Gutter cracked between title page verso and first Contents page which is starting to separate. Gutter has been reinforced between frontispiece and title. Endpaper gutters are not cracked and the binding is o/w firm. Gift inscription in ink to verso of ffep. Spotting to front and back matter and final couple of text pages, also damp-staining to the edges of those pages. However, text pages and illustrations are remarkably clean.
