(2) PO names to fEP (one w/strike-out). Translation of a humorous satire on the woes of marriage translated from a version penned in the 16th century by illustri…ous statesman and historian, Niccolò Machiavelli (1469 - 1527); author of the treatise on statecraft, The Prince, in which it is argued, for pragmatism, political cunning and unethical methods of governance is justified. It has been suggested that this lively novella of marital unhappiness by Machiavelli is autobiographical --- that antecedents can be traced to old Latin and sacred writings of the Hebrews, renders it unlikely. Though unstated, this edition is of Thomas Roscoe's translation. Danuta Laskowska (Illustrator) (illustrator).

Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Reprint. 1928. Reprint of the Oxford 'World's Classic' edition of 1927 (No. 300). xviii, [i], 535pp. and a 16-page publisher's catalogue. Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) was an Italian goldsmith, sculptor, and author. His autobiography was started in the year 1…558 at the age of 58 and ended just before his last trip to Pisa around the year 1563. The memoirs give a detailed account of his singular career, as well as his loves, hatreds, passions, and delights, written in an energetic, direct, and racy style. Considered a classic, it is commonly regarded as one of the more colorful autobiographies from the Renaissance and one of the most important. Thomas Roscoe's translation was based on Thomas Nugent's, and heavily expurgated. In the present edition the translation has been revised throughout, and the omitted passages have been restored, newly translated from the Italian text. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and a blind-stamped design on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with a name and date neatly written on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the top and bottom edges are rubbed with some creasing and small tears. Small pieces are missing from the corner tips and bottom corners of the spine and about 1/8" is missing from parts of the top of the spine. A dent has caused a small hole near the bottom of the front spine edge.
