Monumental study of the origins, development, implementation, and decline of the various strands of Marxism, and its interpreters. Publisher's original navy blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A better than very good set, the bindings square and firm with some rubbing and bumping to the spine tips and extremities, the cloth l…ightly faded to the upper edge of volume I is otherwise bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout with some spotting to the upper edge of the first two volumes. Complete with the very good rubbed and creased, lightly toned to the upper edge of volumes I and III, volume II with some fading to the spine. All volumes are price-clipped to the lower front flap. The Polish philosopher's critically acclaimed analysis of Marxist thought, written between 1968 and 1976, at a time when it was impossible to publish the work in Communist ruled Poland. First published in France by the Institut Littéraire between 1976 and 1978, this first edition in English, translated by P. S. Falla, was published by the Oxford University Press in 1978. Due to his criticism of Marxism and Communism, Ko akowski was effectively exiled from Poland in 1968. He spent most of the remainder of his career at All Souls College in Oxford. "Main Currents ot Marxism is "must" reading for any serious student of Marx and Marxism and an invaluable sourcebook for the non-specialist who wishes to gain quick yet comprehensive access to an in-depth examination of the various tendencies and controversies in the rich heritage of Marxist thought." (John E. Elliott, Journal of Economic Issues, September 1985). "It is lucid, comprehensive, well informed, and also well written; the sweep of the narrative carries the reader along with it, and there are few if any longueurs. A word of praise is due to the translator, P. S. Falla, who has rendered the original Polish text with a skill that makes one unaware that one is reading a translation." (G. H. R. Parkinson, Philosophy, October 1979). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. All items are catalogued by humans.
