Contemporary calf, ornately border gilt-stamped on boards, gilt-stamped lettering and ornament in compartmented spine; 32mo; pp. 443, plus engraved vignette-illustrated title-p., engraved frontispiece. Sipne just a little dry; some light scuffing along joints, at spine tips, and edges of boards. Some light foxing on prelims and terminals, but text block is overall clean and unmarked.

The ninth edition of this work in the publisher's original boards. Jerusalem Delivered, also known as The Liberation of Jerusalem, is an epic poem by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), first published in 1581. This highly imaginative poem tells the story of the First Crusade in which Christian knights battle Muslims in order to take Jerusalem. The poem was hugely successful and influential. This is the ninth edition of John Hoole"s English translation of this work, written in heroic couplets. It is complete in one volume. In the publisher's original boards. Externally, sound, though lightly soiled to the boards. Small tear to the tail of the spine, vertical crack to the spine, and small loss to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Good. book.

Translated from the Italian by John Hoole. Engraved title page vignette, A. Walker. Scuffing to the leather. Front hinges are weak but holidng. Bookplates and ownership inscriptions. There is a small hand written note describing the work bound into volume 1. ESTC T129222.

Tender joints reinforced with Japanese paper. Ownership inscription on front blank. The19th-century literary historian Henry Hallam called Ariosto "Europe's second-favorite poet after Homer." Indeed there was an appetite for a modern English translation to replace the Elizabethan version by John Harington. John Hoole assumed the enormous task, and produced this very popular version in rhymed couplets with extensive annotation and a biographical essay. The publication is notable for the commission, in volume three, of a frontispiece plate engraved by William Blake, as well as for plates after Angelica Kauffman, Gertrud Metz, and William Hamilton.
