Very good. Very good. Light foxing. Size 15.25 x 12 Inches. This is an 1845 Joseph Meyer map of Missouri, published near the height of Oregon-bound migration. Independence, Missouri, a city founded in western Missouri near the Missouri River, acted as the launching point for the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail, two important wagon routes across the western United States. Go West! Independence appears in the upper third of the state near Missouri's western border. A road heading south from Independence is labeled von Santa Fe , identifying the older of the two emigrant routes. The Oregon Trail remains unlabeled but unmistakably appears, heading north along the Missouri River to Fort Leavenworth. The road across the state from Independence to St. Charles and St. Louis is illustrated in detail, with mileage between the towns noted. Rivers and streams provide even more understanding of the state's geography. A mileage chart in the lower left corner summarizes three routes across the state, giving mileage between the towns and other landmarks. The Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail The Santa Fe Trail was opened by William Becknell in 1821. It began as a merchant route and operated until the Santa Fe Railroad was completed in 1880. The Oregon Trail (the more famous of the two) was initially blazed by trappers and fur traders beginning around 1811. At that time, it was passable on horseback and on foot. The first migrant wagon train was organized in 1836. Hundreds of thousands traveled along the Oregon Trail and its offshoots, settling territory from Missouri to Oregon. The transcontinental railroad helped end the era of the trail's usage since the railroad made the trip faster, safer, and cheaper. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by Joseph Meyer in his Hand-Atlas . We note 2 examples of this map cataloged in OCLC, which are part of the collections at the University of Michigan and the Birmingham Public Library. References: Rumsey 4807.161. Good. Wear and discoloration along fold lines. Size 17.75 x 4 Inches. This classic c. 1953 highway association strip map promotes Florida's St. Johns River Trail, 'the inland route to Miami.' It was produced early in Florida's post-WWII population and tourism boom, which quickly necessitated new highway infrastructure. A Closer Look Rather than a single highway, the St. Johns Trail combined multiple highways (especially U.S. 17 and FL 15) that offered an inland connection between the state's north and south. Some of these highways did not exist, or did not exist as highways, when the association was founded c. 1940, and highways were added to the trail as they were completed or planned throughout the 1940s and early 1950s. The highways that form the trail are highlighted in red here, while additional highways are noted in black. Cities, lakes, rivers, and landmarks (such as Everglades National Park and the University of Florida) are indicated. At bottom, a table of distances notes the mileage between Jacksonville and other towns and cities along the trail's routes, which are discussed in short, promotional descriptions on the verso. The St. Johns River Trail was intended to accomplish two tasks: alleviating demand on the popular coastal route (U.S. 1), billing itself as the faster and more scenic of the two, and providing access and business to growing inland towns and cities. In the following decades, these routes were supplemented by the Florida Turnpike and Interstate-95. Highway Associations The movement promoting the construction of 'good quality' roads did not begin with the invention of the automobile, but rather with the bicycle. At the time, most interurban roads were unpaved and impractical for cycling. The 'Good Roads Movement' was inaugurated in May 1880 to advocate for bicycle enthusiasts, riding clubs, and manufacturers. By 1910, the American Automobile Association (AAA) jumped onboard, along with over one hundred other local and national organizations. 'Road booster' organizations emerged to promote specific, often branded, highways. By the 1920s, about 250 'named' highways, each with their own boosters, crossed the United States. 'Road boosters' still exist, but most disbanded in the 1950s and 60s with the emergence of the federally funded Interstate Highway System. Publication History and Census This strip map was produced by the St. Johns River Trail Association. It is undated but from context must have been printed around 1953. The only known example of this map in institutional collections is held by the University of Florida. An earlier edition dated c. 1942 is also held by the Tampa Bay History Center's Touchton Map Library. References: OCLC 929909999. Tampa Bay History Center Touchton Map Library 2019.102.024 (c. 1942 edition).

Very good. Light dampstaning. Size 16.25 x 24.5 Inches. This is a 1948 Irvin Shope pictorial map of the western United States celebrating the Oregon Trail. Coverage embraces the western United States from roughly the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers to the Pacific seaboard. The Oregon Trail, covering some 2,170 miles, was an important artery of trade and westward expansion in the mid to late 19th century - used by more than 400,000 settlers, farmers, miners, ranchers, and business owners and their families. A Closer Look A thick red line highlights the Oregon Trail, and offshoots, such as the California Trail, are emphasized with dashed lines. Important waypoints are labeled, including Chimney Rock in Nebraska and South Pass in Wyoming. Other highlighted trails include the Santa Fe Trail, the Overland Stage Route, Lewis and Clark's route to the Pacific, and the celebrated Pony Express Route. Pictorial vignettes illustrate different aspects of the journey west. Covered wagons pulled by teams of oxen, Native Americans hunting bison and stalking settlers, and even a wagon floating across a river decorate the map. A stunning illustration of Fort Laramie and a covered wagon occupy the bottom portion of the map and truly encapsulate the popular stereotype of life in the Old West. Short captions offer historical facts about westward expansion. These note the importance of frontier forts, such as Bent's Fort, and significant moments in westward exploration. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by Irvin Shope in 1948. There are at least two editions, one issued by Shope himself, and a second, as here, licensed by the American Pioneer Trails Associate and printed in 1948 by the Clarke Press of Manchester, New Hampshire. It is well represented in institutional collections but is scarce on the private market. References: OCLC 33958222.
