Nella prima sezione dell'esemplare ritroviamo la Historia Francorum di Gregorio di Tours, divisa in dieci libri e qui integrata da un supplemento successivo di altri 110 anni e indicato come "undecimus liber", traccia le origini della dinastia merovingia. L'autore descrive il passaggio della Gallia romana sotto il controllo franco, soffermandosi sulla conversione di re Clodoveo al cattolicesimo e sulle successive, lotte intestine tra i sovrani merovingi. Accanto alla storia politica, l'opera assume una forte impronta religiosa e teologica, documentando i duri conflitti della Chiesa contro le eresie e le guerre spirituali. Nella seconda parte, il Breviarum Chronicum di Adone di Vienne (Sens, 800 - Vienne, 875) riprende questa prospettiva inserendola in una cronaca di raggio universale. Parte infatti dall'origine del mondo e intreccia la storia sacra a quella profana, analizza inoltre la successione dei imperi dell'antichità fino ad arrivare al fulcro dell'opera, inteso con l'ascesa dei Carolingi, il regno di Carlo Magno e le vicende dei suoi successori, fino ad arrivare alla sua epoca, tra l'866 e l'869.
