A highly influential 18th-century popular medical manual, Advice to the People in General, with Regard to their Health by Dr. Samuel-Auguste Tissot represents one of the most widely disseminated Enlightenment-era guides to practical medicine. First published in French as Avis au Peuple, the work was intended to bring accessible medical knowledge to those without regular access to physicians, particularly rural populations. This 1765 English translation by J. Kirkpatrick expands Tissotâs reach to an Anglophone audience, offering guidance on the causes, prevention, and treatment of common diseases, as well as instructions for preparing affordable remedies. The text covers a wide range of ailmentsâ"from fevers and inflammations to dental disease and internal disordersâ"reflecting 18th-century medical theory grounded in humoral pathology yet increasingly oriented toward empirical observation. Particularly notable are the practical household remedies and detailed discussions of everyday health concerns, making the work an early example of public health literature.
